191 – Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews

Magic BitesThis was my first read over vacation last week.  It had been recommended to me through my book club.  Here’s the Goodreads summary:

“When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate’s guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way…”

True Rating: 3.5 stars

I liked the book. I liked Kate. I really liked Curren. I just wasn’t crazy about it all.

I’m interested in seeing what the rest of the series holds, but I won’t go running out to do it right now. That kind of bums me out since I heard such fabulous things about this series.

I don’t know. We’ll see.  I can say that one of the girls in my book club saw my review on Goodreads and commented to me that books 1 & 2 are both like this but books 3 & 4 are totally worth the wait and help make up for the blah-ness of 1 & 2.  I’m much more inclined to read the rest of this series now.
